Togaviridae -- Rubella Flashcards
Describe the genetic set up.
+ssRNA genome
Icosahedral caspid
Enveloped
Inactivators of rubella include…
Chemical Agents, UV, pH, Heat
How does replication happen?
+RNA immediately binds to ribosomes as mRNA
2/3 genome is made a polypeptide (later cleaved into 4 protein protease and polymerase)
1/3 genome gives caspid and envelope proteins
Other name for rubella?
German measles
Why give a shit about rubella?
Congenital Rubella Syndrome
How is it transmitted?
aerosol
Characteristic symptom?
Swollen lymph glands behind ears/in neck
Rash that starts on face/neck, and moves down the body
Bonus symptom sometimes seen in adults?
Arthritis
Does rubella typically pass from mother to child?
In 90% of cases that the mother is infected
Why care if the mother passes German Measles?
Miscarriage, Stillbirth or severe birth defects (Congenital Rubella Syndrome)
Symptoms of Congenital Rubella Syndrome
Impaired Hearing (85%) Heart Defects (50%) Eye Defects (43%) Autism, Thyroid Dysfunction
Pathogenesis of Rubella?
Inf. nasopharynx/lungs
Spreads to Lymph Nodes and monocyte system
Viremia –> to other tissues/skin
In immunologically deficient pregnant woman, infects placenta/fetus
Diagnosis of Rubella?
Rubella IgM + Rash
Prevention of Rubella?
MMR
