Swollen/Painful Salivary Glands
Fever/Headache
Pain Swallowing/Chewing
Weakness/Fatigue
Can be asymptomatic too
Common Complications? (5)
Orchitis/Oophoritis Pancreatitis Aseptic Meningitis Encephalitis Deafness
Describe the pathogenesis of Mumps.
Inf. epithelial cells and replicates in nasopharynx/lymph nodes
12-25 days later – Viremia
In viremia goes to meninges, salivary glands, testis, etc.
Inflammation of infected tissues leads to characteristic symptoms
How is Mumps spread?
Resp. Droplets, Fomites
What two groups are most at risk for mumps?
Unvaccinated and Immunocompromised
Treatment for Mumps?
Suck it up
Maybe some corticosteroids if its severe
Prevention of Mumps?
MMR (12 months and before school)
What is Mumps vaccine made with?
Live virus
