Q

What is the Hypothalamic Pituitary Thyroid Axis?

A

Thyrotropin Releasing Hormone (TRH) is released from the hypothalamus and to the pituitary gland.

This then signals the realise of TSH from the pituitary gland to the thyroid.

This then causes the thyroid to produce T4 and T3

16
Q

Why does hypothyroidism lower heart rate?

A

T3&T4 maintain vaso-motortone - when reduced it tips the balance to vasoconstriction

17
Q

What is hyperthyroidism?

A

Overactive thyroid
Increased levels of T3 and T4

18
Q

What are the causes of hyperthyroidism?

A

Graves disease
Thyroiditis
Iodine intake
Excess thyroid medication

19
Q

What is Graves Disease?

A

Autoimmune disease
Thyroid is over stimulated by autoimmune response to produce thyroid hormone

20
Q

What is thyroiditis?

A

Viral infection can trigger the release of hormones that were stored in the thyroid gland.

21
Q

What are some symptoms of hyperthyroidism?

A

Anxiety
Depression
Weight loss
Hunger
Shaking hands
Enlarged thyroid gland
Increased heart rate
Arrhythmia
HTN

22
Q

What are the cardiovascular symptoms of hyperthyroidism?

A

Tachycardia
Hypertension

23
Q

Why does hyperthyroidism cause tachycardia?

A

Increased sensitivity of beta receptors on the heart increases heart rate

24
Q

Why does hyperthyroidism cause HTN?

A

Increased contractility - increased stroke volume - increased cardiac output = hypertension

A
