What is coeliac disease?
Its an autoimmune disorder where the ingestion of gluten triggers an immune response in the small intestine. This response damages the
intestinal lining, leading to
malabsorption of nutrients.
What are the causes of coeliac disease?
Genetic predisposition
Environmental triggers such as: stress, surgery, viral infections can all activate the disease in genetically predisposed individuals.
What is the epidemiology of coeliac disease?
Only 3/100 people that carry a gene for coeliac disease will go on to develop the disease.
The incidence of coeliac has increased fivefold in the last 25 years.
What are the GI symptoms of coeliac disease?
Diarrhoea
Bloating
Constipation
Vomiting
Abdo pain
Lactose intolerant
What are the non digestive symptoms of coeliac disease?
Fatigue
Weight loss
Anaemia
Ulcers
Irregular periods
Itchy rashes
Fertility issues
Joint pain
Osteo problems
Peripheral neuropathy
Gluten ataxia
How is coeliac diagnosed?
Blood tests
Genetic tests
Endoscopy .
Positive results of blood tests and genetic tests often lead to endoscopy.
What is the treatment for coeliac disease?
The only effective treatment is a strict gluten free diet; so that villi can recover.
