Q

What is myocarditis

A

Inflammation of the myocardium with necrosis of the cardiac myocyte cells.

This can extend into the pericardium causing myopericarditis.

Q

What is non infective endocarditis?

A

Refers to a rare condition characterised by formation of sterile vegetations. Without treatment, these can lead to valve dysfunction, heart failure, systemic embolism and death.

Q

What happens in infective endocarditis?

16
Q

What do vegetations do in the heart?

A

Disturbs the function of the valves and pieces may break away resulting in the infective/septic emboli.

17
Q

What medications are used to treat infection and inflammation of the heart?

A

Antibiotics/antimicrobials
Meds used to treat heart failure or arrhythmias.
Corticosteroids
Anti inflammatory meds
Surgery to drain fluid from tamponade.
