What does croup affect?
The larynx, trachea and bronchi
What are the main symptoms of croup?
Stridor and barking cough
What is the pathophysiology of croup?
Viruses invade the laryngeal mucosa leading to inflammation
This narrows the subglottic region causing the stridor and hypoxia,
What is the cause of aetiology?
Mycoplasma pneumonie
Parainfluenza - 75% of all cases
RNA
RSV
What is the epidemiology of croup?
Most common between 6months and 3 year olds
Uncommon after age 6
Affects boys more than girls
When do hospital admissions for croup peak?
Late autumn ( September - December )
What is the symptom severity score of croup called?
Westley croup score
