Heart Failure Flashcards
What is systolic heart failure?
When the heart can’t pump hard enough causing blood in lungs
What is diastolic heart failure?
When the heart can’t fill enough causing blood in lungs
What is cardiac output
The quantity of blood pumped by the heart in a given period of time, typically measured in litres per minute.
What is ejection fraction
Your ejection fraction is the amount of blood that your heart pumps each time it beats.
What is a normal ejection fraction?
Anything above 50%
Lower than 40% is systolic heart failure.
What is both sided heart failure called?
Biventricular failure
What is left sided heart failure
Usually systolic (pumping) heart failure.
Caused by damage to the myocardium.
What is the most common cause of left sided heart failure?
Ischemic heart disease causing coronary atherosclerosis (plaque buildup)
What do diuretics do?
Reduce fluid build up
What do ACE inhibitors do?
Dilate blood vessels
What medications are prescribes for left sided heart failure?
ACE inhibitors
Diuretics
What is right sided heart failure often caused by?
Left sided heart failure
