What is peptic ulcer disease?
Characterised by erosions in the mucus membrane lining of the GI tract.
Stomach and Duodenum are the most common sites.
When erosion invades a blood vessel wall, haemorrhage occurs. This may be major or minor.
What are the most common causes of peptic ulcer disease?
Helicobacter pylori infection and NSAIDS
What are the causes of peptic (gastric) ulcers?
NSAIDS
Helicobacter pylori
Smoking
Alcohol
Steriods
Stress
Changes in gastric mucin consistency
Acid producing tumours
What are the symptoms of peptic ulcer disease?
Burning/gnawing central abdomen pain
Indigestions
Heartburn
Loss of appetite
Nausea and vomiting
Bloating
Weight loss
What is the treatment for peptic ulcers?
Test for and trest H.pylori (antibiotics)
Meds for acid suppression
Avoid NSAIDS
Stop smoking/alcohol
