The Nervous System KKDP1 Flashcards
Central Nervous System:
Processes information received from the body’s internal and external environments and activates the appropriate response.
Brain:
Processes sensory information and activates an appropriate response.
Spinal Cord:
Carries sensory information to the brain, relays motor information to the PNS
Peripheral Nervous System:
Transmits information to and from the CNS.
Somatic Nervous System:
Carries sensory information to the CNS and motor information from the CNS.
Autonomic Nervous System:
Connects the CNS to the body’s’ internal organs and glands, providing feedback to the brain about their activities. ANS is self-regulating.
Sympathetic Nervous System:
Activates internal muscles, organs and glands to prepare the body for vigorous activity or to deal with a stressful or threatening situation.
Parasympathetic Nervous System:
Helps maintain the internal body environment in a steady, balanced state of normal functioning in times of minimal stress, and gradually restores the body to a state of calm following the conclusion of a threatening situation.
Pupils:
SNS: Dilate, PNS: Contract
Digestion:
SNS: Decrease contractions
PNS: Increase contractions
Saliva:
SNS: Decrease saliva production
PNS: Increase saliva production
Increased heart rate:
Allows blood to move faster around the body to increase muscle effectiveness.
Faster breathing:
Allows more oxygen to be pumped into the lungs, to support the blood.
