6: KKDP 11 Evidence Based Interventions Flashcards
Biological:
GABA Antagonists
Relaxation Techniques
Breathing Retraining
GABA Antagonists:
Stimulate GABA activity thereby reducing physiological arousal
Relaxation techniques:
Methods that can be learnt to reduce physiological and psychological arousal associated with stress and anxiety. Includes exercise and breathing retraining.
Breathing retraining:
Physiological Benefit: Lowered BP and HR
Psychological: Increased feelings of calm
Exercise:
Physiological: Stress hormones reduced
Psychological: Distraction from rumination
Psychological:
CBT
Systematic Desensitisation
Psychoeducation
CBT:
Encourages the individual to identify their fear and phobia related thoughts that reflect cognitive bias
Cognitive:
Encouraged to look for evidence that supports and challenges their phobia
Behavioural:
Involves activities to help distract the individual and reduce fear and anxiety. E.g. meditation, breathing retraining
Systematic Desensitisation:
A behavioural therapy that aims to replace an anxiety response with a relaxation response when an individual with a phobia encounters a fear stimulus.
Step 1:
Teaches person a relaxation technique to decrease anxiety when confronted by the phobic stimulus
Step 2:
Establish a fear hierarchy
Step 3:
Gradually pair each item in the hierarchy with the relaxation technique
Psychoeducation:
Involves the provision and explanation of information about a mental disorder and its treatment to individuals diagnosed with the disorder.
Challenging unrealistic thoughts:
Having family encourage the person to test or evaluate their unrealistic thoughts
