Mentally Healthy:
- Cope with normal stressors
- Can work productively
- Able to make a contribution to his or her community
Mental Health Problem 1:
Adversely affects the way a person thinks, feels or behaves
Mental Health Problem 2:
To a lesser extent than a mental disorder, temporary
Mental Health Problem 3:
Causes impairment of functioning to a degree
Mental Health Problem e.g.:
Sadness and despair that lasts a week
Mental Health Disorder 1:
Involves a combination of thoughts, feelings and/or behaviours which are usually associated with significant personal distress
Mental Health Disorder 2:
Involves impairment of the ability to function effectively in everyday life
Mental Health Disorder e.g.:
Clinically diagnosed disorders such as schizophrenia
Mental Health continuum:
The location of an individual’s mental health on the continuum is not fixed
Internal and External factors:
Mental health is influenced by internal and external factors
Internal factors:
Influences that originate inside or within a person and can be biological or psychological
Biological Internal factors:
Includes physiologically based influences, often not under our control
Biological Internal factors e.g.:
Sex, genes, fight-flight-freeze response
Psychological Internal Factors:
Includes all influences associated with mental processes
Psychological Internal Factors e.g.:
Beliefs, perceptions of ourselves and the environment
