Role of Neurotransmitters KKDP4 Flashcards
Lock and Key Process:
Each type of NT has a chemically distinct shape
The NT binds to a complementary receptor, this ‘unlocks’ the post-synaptic neuron
Excitatory:
Neurotransmitters more likely to fire
Inhibitory:
Neurotransmitters are less likely to fire
Inhibitory v Excitatory:
The inhibitory action of GABA counterbalances the excitatory effect of Glutamate and vice versa.
Glutamate:
Excitatory
Enhances learning and memory
Plays a role in movement
Dopamine:
Involved in pleasure and reward, voluntary muscles movement and emotional arousal.
Mainly excitatory, but can also be inhibitory.
GABA:
Inhibitory
Plays a role in regulating anxiety
Serotonin:
Helps maintain calm and stable mood, pain control, regular sleep cycles and digestion process
