Stress:
A state of psychological and physiological arousal produced by external or internal stressors that are perceived by the individual as challenging or exceeding their ability or resources to cope.
Stressors:
Any person, object or event that challenges or threatens you.
Acute stress:
Involves stress that is brief and specific to the demands of a particular situation.
Tends to produce a very high arousal level for a relatively short amount of time.
E.G deadlines
Chronic stress:
Involves ongoing demands, pressures and worries that are long lasting.
Tends to produce an increased arousal level that persists over a relatively long time.
Eustress:
A positive psychological response to a stressor, indicated by the presence of positive psychological states such as feeling enthusiastic and motivated, excited, active and alert.
Distress:
A negative psychological response to a stressor, indicated by the presence of negative psychological states such as anger, anxiety, nervousness, irritability or tension.
Eustress V Distress:
Eustress considered to be beneficial or desirable
Distress associated with negative feelings
Daily Pressures:
Little problems of everyday living that are irritants, events that annoy or bother us and which can make us angry or upset.
Life Event:
An event in ones life that involves change that forces us to adapt to new circumstances.
Acculturative Stress:
Refers to the stress people experience in trying to adapt to a new culture when living in it for a considerable period of time.
Major Stress:
An event that is extraordinarily stressful or disturbing for almost anyone who experiences it. E.G violently mugged
Catastrophes:
An unpredictable event that causes widespread damage or suffering, disrupting a whole community at once.
