Predisposing:
Increase ones susceptibility to mental health problems or a mental disorder
Predisposing examples:
Family history, poor self efficacy, neglect or abuse
Precipitating:
Increases susceptibility and contributes to the occurrence (triggers) or exacerbates a mental disorder
Precipitating examples:
Substance abuse, confronting news, life event
Perpetuating:
Prolongs the course of a mental disorder and inhibits recovery
Perpetuating examples:
Poor response to medication, poor sleep, rumination
Protective Factor:
Are factors that have a positive affect on the health of an individual. They minimise the occurrence or reoccurrence of mental health problems.
Protective factors example:
Healthy relationships, good job, sufficient level of income
