3: KKDP 9 Brain Trauma Flashcards
Amnesia:
A permanent/temporary, complete/partial loss of memory typically as a result of organic cause.
Type of Amnesia:
Anterograde Amnesia
Anterograde Amnesia:
Anterograde Amnesia is a loss of memory for information or events after the trauma occurs, as the sufferer is unable to consolidate and store new LTMs. Sufferers generally have no difficulty recalling memories stored before brain trauma.
Symptons:
Early: Confusion, memory loss
Middle: Severe memory loss, difficulty in making simple decisions
Later: Sever physical and mental impairment, loss of ability to learn new tasks
Amyloid Plaques:
Abnormal clusters of protein fragments that collect on the OUTSIDE of neurons, destroying synapses and the transmission of neural impulses.
Neurofibillary tangles:
Abnormal build-up of twisted strands of protein fibres WITHIN neurons, causing cell death and disruption of neural communication.
