6: KKDP 13 Models for behaviours of change Flashcards
The Transtheoretical Model:
It is a stage based theory that describes and explains how people intentionally change their behaviour to achieve a health related goal
Pre-Contemplation:
The stage where there is no intention to change behaviour in the next 6 months
Contemplation:
The stage in which people are aware that the problem exists and are seriously considering about overcoming it in the next 6 months, but have not yet made a commitment to action
Preparation:
The stage in which people are intending to take action in the next month
Action:
The stage in which individuals modify their behaviour, experiences or environment to overcome their problem
Maintenance:
The stage in which people work to prevent relapse and have continued the behaviour for more than 6 months.
Strength 1:
Takes account of individual differences, recognising that different people are in different stages to make changes.
Strength 2:
Allows for minor and significant setbacks from which an individual may recover, important when considering the addictive behaviours where relapse is common
Weakness 1:
Researchers have questioned whether the stages are in fact distinct categories and in the correct order
Weakness 2:
There is not enough research on variables that influence state transitions
