The Heart Flashcards
Which side is thicker?
Left ventricle- thicker, more muscular walls
Why is the left side more thicker?
Needs to contract powerfully around the body
Why is the right side not that thick?
Only needs to get blood to the lungs
What has thicker walls- the ventricles or the atria?
Ventricles
Why do the ventricles have thicker walls than the atria?
They have to push blood out of the heart
Atria have to push blood a short distance into the ventricles
What are the atroventricular valves?
Bicuspid and tricuspid valves
What do the atroventricular valves link?
The atria to the ventricles and stop blood flowing back into the atria when the ventricles contract
What do the semilunar valves link?
The ventricles to the pulmonary artery and aorta to stop blood flowing back into the heart
Route of deoxygenated blood?
Superior vena cava -> right atrium -> (tricuspid valve) -> right ventricle -> (semilunar valve) -> pulmonary artery
Route of oxygenated blood?
Lungs -> pulmonary vein -> (bicuspid valve) -> left ventricle -> (semilunar valve) -> aorta
How do valves open?
Only one way
What do valves being opened or closed depend on?
The pressure of the heart chambers
What are the functions of the co arteries and veins?
Supply oxygenated blood to the heart so it can contract
Functions of papillary muscles and tendinous cords?
Prevents the backflow of blood by restricting the movement of the AV
Function of the septum?
Separate oxygenated blood from deoxygenated blood
