Arteries Flashcards
What type of blood?
oxygenated (except for pulmonary)
Direction of blood flow?
Away from the heart to the organs
Muscular wall?
Thick
Valves?
No
Elastic tissue and function?
Thick
Allows stretch and recoil- can maintain constant blood pressure
Lumen?
Narrow
Muscular wall and function?
Thick- for contractions to control flow of blood and to withstand pressure
How is the endothelium layer of the artery adapted for the transport of blood?
Smooth surface so allows blood to flow freely/reduces friction
Folded so allows the artery to stretch when blood volume increases
Role of elastic tissue in arteries?
Enables the artery wall to stretch so that it isn’t damaged by high blood pressure
After stretching the artery walls can recoil to their original shape so they maintain blood pressure
