Golgi Vesicles Flashcards
What are Golgi vesicles?
Membrane-bound, fluid-filled vesicles
Where are they located?
In the cytoplasm
What shape and size are they?
Small and round
Where are many found?
Found in a high density near the edges of the sacs
Function?
Store and transport modified proteins and lipids from the Golgi apparatus to target cells
What are lysosomes?
A special type of Golgi vesicle
What do lysosomes contain?
Enzymes called lysozymes
What do lysozymes aid?
The breakdown of proteins, polysaccharides, lipids, nucleic acid and old organelles
What type of organelle are lysosomes?
Membrane-bound
What are lysozymes?
Digestive enzymes which digest material in the cell
What can lysozymes be used for?
To digest invading cells/digest worn out cell structures
What system are lysozymes?
The waste disposal system of the cell
What does the membrane surounding the lysosome do?
Protects the rest of the cell from their digestive activity
What are lysozymes referred to as?
Hydrolytic enzymes- they facilitate hydrolysis reactions
