Mitosis Flashcards
How many rounds of division in mitosis?
1 round of division
Are genetically identical or varied cells made?
Genetically identical
Are diploid or haploid cells made?
Diploid
What is mitosis used for?
Growth and repair e.g. clonal expansion of B cells
4 key stages of mitosis?
Prophase
Metaphase
Anaphase
Telophase
What happens during prophase?
The chromosomes condense and become visible
The nuclear membrane breaks down
The centrioles create spindle fibres which form between poles of the cell
What happens during metaphase?
The chromosomes align along the equator of the cell
The spindle fibres released from the poles now attach to the centromere and chromatid
What happens during anaphase?
The spindle fibres pull the centromere and chromatids towards the opposite poles
The centromere divides into two and the individual chromatids are pulled to each individual pole
What happens during telophase?
The chromosomes become longer and thinner again
The spindle fibres disintegrate and the nuclear membrane reforms
The chromosomes uncoil, making them no longer visible
