The Cell Cycle Flashcards
How do eukaryotic cells divide?
By mitosis or meiosis
How do prokaryotic cells replicate?
By binary fission
Do viruses undergo cell division?
No as they are non-living
How do viruses replicate?
Inside of the host cells- they invade by injecting their nucleic acid into cells to replicate the virus particles
What are the 3 phases of the cell cycle?
Interphase, nuclear division (mitosis or meiosis) and cytokinesis
What stages are interphase?
G1, S, G2
What can nuclear division either be?
Mitosis or meiosis
What happens in g1?
The cell increases in mass and size- organelle synthesis- makes more ribosomes, more ER etc
What happens in S phase?
DNA synthesis- each chromosome consists of 2 identical sister chromatids
What happens in G2?
Growth and preparation for mitosis- making the cell bigger
What is the longest stage in the cell cycle?
Interphase
What happens during interphase?
The organelles double, the cell grows and DNA replicates
What does mitosis create?
2 identical diploid cells with identical DNA for growth and repair
What happens during meiosis?
Creates 4 genetically different haploid cells- meiosis creates gametes
What is cytokinesis?
The final stage- the division of the cytoplasm to create the new cells
