Q

What is independent segregation?

A

During meiosis 1, homologous chromosomes line up randomly opposite their pair at the equator
The combination of chromosomes in the maternal and paternal origin that go into the daughter cell is a matter of chance

Q

Variety from new genetic combinations?

A

Each member of a homologous pair of chromosomes have exactly the same genes
The alleles of the group may differ
The independent asssortment produces new genetic chromosomes

Q

Crossing over?

A

Each chromosome lines up alongside its homologous partner
The chromatids become twisted around eachother
Tension is created and portions of the chromosomes are broken off
The broken portions might rejoin with the chromatids of its homologous pairs
