Ribosomes Flashcards
Where are ribosomes formed?
In the nucleolus
What are ribosomes composed of?
rRNA and proteins
What type of ribosomes are found in eukaryotic cells?
80s (60s and 40s)
What type of ribosomes are found in prokaryotes, mitochondrial and chloroplasts?
70s (50s and 30s)
Where are ribosomes found?
Found freely in the cytoplasm or as part of the rough ER in eukaryotic cells
Function of ribosomes?
Protein synthesis- specifically the translation of mRNA into polypeptide chains
Formation of ribosomes?
Formed by rRNA synthesis
rRNA is transcribed from ribosomal DNA in the nucleolus
Ribosomal proteins?
These proteins are synthesised in the cytoplasm and imported into the nucleus
Assembly in the nucleolus?
rRNA and ribosomal proteins combine to form ribosomal subunits
Export to cytoplasm?
These subunits are exposed to the cytoplasm where they come together to form ribosomes during protein synthesis
