Thalamus Flashcards
The primary relay center of the brain
Thalamus
Receives tract from spinothalamic tracts, Dorsal column of spinal cord
Relays to primary somatosensory cortex
Ventral Posterolateral Nucleus (VPL)
Receives tract from trigeminal and taste pathway
Relays to primary somatosensory cortex
Ventral Posteromedial Nucleus (VPL)
Receives tract from optic pathway from optic tracts
Relays to Primary VISUAL cortex
Lateral Geniculate Body (LGB)
“L” for looking
Receives tract from auditory pathway
Relays to Primary AUDITORY cortex
Medial Geniculate Body (LGB)
“M” for music
Receives tract from cerebellum and basal ganglia
Relays to precentral MOTOR cortex
Ventral lateral nucleus, Ventral anterior nucleus
Responsible for EMOTIONAL and MEMORY, learning and alertness
Anterior/ Dorsomedial Nucleus
Very sad syndrome
Manifestation: pure sensory low without weakness of contralateral side
Hemilateral sensory loss of all modalities
Hemilateral pain
Hypersensitivity – if you touch their affected side, they will shout!
THALAMIC INFARCTION (Dejerine-Roussy syndrome or central pain syndrome)
