Consists of mammary gland tissue, fibrous and fatty tissue, blood and lymph vessels and nerves
Extends from the 2nd to 6th ribs and from the sternum to the MAL
Breast
nipple - level of 4th ICS
Strong fibrous tissue that run from the dermis of the skin to the deep layer of the superficial fascia through the breast
Act as walls to separate breast into 15-20 lobes/compartments
Cooper’s ligament (Suspensory)
Modified sweat gland located in the fatty superficial fascia
Mammary gland
AXILLARY TAIL OF SPENCE - superior and lateral portion extension
Layer of loose CT separating breast from the deep fascia
Potential space that allows for movement of breast over underlying structures
Retromammary Space
Most breast adenocarcinoma are lactiferous duct carcinomas that begin as painless masses commonly in the
UPPER LATERAL QUADRANT
Injuries related after radical mastectomy
winging of scapula – serratus anterior – long thoracic nerve
difficulty in adduction, extension and rotation of the arm medially – latissimus dorsi – thoracodorsal nerve
loss of sensation on the upper inner aspect of the arm – intercostal nerve
difficulty in flexion, adduction and medial rotation of the arm – pectoralis major – medial pectoral nerve
Blood Supply of the Breast
Subclavian – INTERNAL THORACIC
Axillary – LATERAL THORACIC AND THORACOACROMIAL
Thoracic aorta – POST INTERCOSTAL
