T3: Lecture 6 Flashcards
What is Social Facilitation?
How the physical presence of others influences our behaviour
Schmitt saw what kinds of results in study of social facilitation?
- Presence had detrimental effects
- When others present
- > Simple task ability improved
- > Complex task ability decreased
What is the Drive Theory of Facilitation?
- Presence of others increases arousal causing display of our dominant response
- Performance is enhanced if our dominant response is appropriate
- Performance is impaired if our dominant response is inappropriate
What is Diffusion of Responsibilty?
As group size increases, individual responsibility decreases
What is De-Individuation?
Presence of other people can have bizarre or negative effects
What happens when people are surrounded by others?
- Lose self-awareness and begin to feel anonymous
- When aroused, loss of SA works to disinhibit impulses normally kept under check
Impulses are…
Situationally dependent
Decrease in self-awareness increases…
Anti-social behaviour
e.g. anonymity leads to aggression
Increase in self awareness decreases….
Antisocial behaviour
e.g. when a mirror was present at a halloween candy station people took the correct amount
What is confomity?
How influence can change what you say
e.g. line experiment when everyone says the obvious wrong one but participant goes along with it
What did Milgram’s study look at?
- To what extent do people obey
- Study found that people will hurt others when ordered to do so
