T1:Lecture 1 Flashcards
What is a phoneme?
A meaningful unit of sound that changed meaning in a language e.g. log->dog
Do all languages have the same phonemes?
No, not all languages have the same phoneme’s
What are morphemes?
Smallest language units that convey meaning e.g. words/suffix/prefix
What are the two types of morphemes?
- Unbound
2. Bound
What are unbound morphemes?
Words e.g. bike
What are bound morphemes?
Suffixes e.g. un. The meaning relies on attachment to another word
Morphemes can be made from what two types of words?
Content or function words
What are content words?
- Unbound
- Hold sentence meaning e.g graduated/married
- Semantic processing relies on processing these
- C.Words map onto concepts
Definition of concept
Unit of semantic memory
What are function words
- Words that bind ideas together (grammer)
- Syntactic processing relies on processing these
What do Broca’s aphasia patients have trouble with?
- Issues with grammer
- Are fine with content words
- Difficulty ordering sound for words corresponds to difficulty ordering words
What is syntax?
- Structure of language
- Different among languages
What do Wernicke’s aphasia patients have trouble with?
- Issue with semantics
- Fine with syntax
- Due to auditory impairment, interpretation of sound and semantic representation is broken
What were the two components of Noam Chomsky’s structure?
- Surface structure: organisation of words at surface level
- Deep Structure: meaning of sentece
One deep structure but two surface structures gives:
words in 2 sentences organised differently but underlying meaning is the same
(1 meaning but 2 ways to arrange it)
