what is intussusception
invagination of one portion of bowel into the lumen of the adjacent bowel, most commonly around the ileo-caecal region
presentation of intussusception
‘dying spells’ child curls up, becomes pale and floppy
bilious vomiting
colic pain
red stool - late sign
management of intussusception
medical emergency
pneumostatic reduction
laparotomy
presentation of an inguinal hernia
groin lump
disappears when lying down
can become incarcerated
management of inguinal hernia
urgent referral for surgery if <1
elective referral if >1
