Why is IgA important?
Most common cause of glomerulonephritis
what presentation does IgA nephropathy usually have?
Usually nephritic syndrome (haematuria, intravascular overload and hypertension).
when does IgA nephropathy often occur?
1-2 days after an URTI.
In older children and adults.
how is IgA nephropathy diagnosis confirmed?
Confirmation biopsy - will show IgA deposits on the mesangial cells.
How is IgA nephropathy treated?
Mild disease - ACE inhibitors
Moderate/severe - Immunosuppression
What is Henoch Schonlein Purpura?
IgA related vasculitis.
What is needed for a diagnosis of HSP?
PALPABLE PURPURA
And one of the following: abdominal pain renal involvement arthritis arthralgia biopsy (showing IgA deposition)
how does IgA present?
Most common childhood vasculitis.
1-3 days post trigger.
4-6 weeks.
Its self limiting.
How many people with IgA vasculitis/HSP relapse?
1-3rd
What causes IgA/HSP?
Viral URTI
streptococcus
Drugs
How is IgA vasculitis treated LONG TERM?
Hypertension and proteinuria screening.
