acute kidney injury r Flashcards
what is AKI
an abrupt loss in function causing retention of urea and nitrogenous waste and dysregulation of extracellular volume and electrolytes
what test do you use to diagnose AKI
serum creatinine (rises in AKI)
criteria for serum creatinine and urine output in AKI
creatinine rise by >1.5x age specific reference
urine output <0.5ml/kg for 8+ hours
presentation of AKI
anuria/oliguria
hypertension
fluid overload
investigations for AKI
serum creatinine urine output PEWS weight urinalysis
pre-renal causes of AKI
problems with perfusion
- hypotension
- dehydration
intrinsic renal causes
glomerular disease
acute tubular necrosis
nephritis
post renal causes
obstructive uropathies - stricture, masses etc
management of AKI
fluid hydration
manage electrolytes
stop nephrotoxic medication - NSAIDs
