Post Streptococcal Glomerulonephritis Flashcards
What type of presentation does post streptococcal glomerulonephritis usually result in?
Usually nephritic syndrome (haematuria)
which layer of the membrane does post infectious glomerulonephritis damage?
The endothelial layer
when is haematuria investigated in children?
Frank haematuria - straight away.
Microscopic haematuria - after 3 separate positive results.
Microscopic haematuria with proteinuria - straight away.
what is a sign of endothelial cell problems?
Frank haematuria
what are the most common causes of anti post infection glomerulonephritis?
Usually Group A streptococcus - on throat or skin
How does the pathophysiology of post infection occur?
Antigen mimicry - the antigens of group A strep are very common to our natural antigens on the kidney.
Antibody-antigen complexes are deposited onto the kidneys.
what is the treatment for post streptococcal glomerulonephritis?
Antibiotics
Supportive renal functions
Diuretics
How many people make a full recovery?
80%
some get progressively worse.
