What is stress?
Stress is a physiological and psychological reaction in response to someone believing they cannot achieve a demand.
What are stressors?
Stressors are cognitive or environmental events that trigger stress. Stressors can be acute or chronic depending on the situation.
How does an athletes perception link to stress?
The perception of the stressor often reflects the response of the stressor. E,g: positive or negative
What are the two types of stress?
Distress and Eustress.
What is distress?
Distress is a bad form of stress as it is an extreme form of apprehension, anxiety and nervousness.
What is eustress?
Eustress is a positive form of stress as it is a sense of fufilment and increases motivation.
What are the two causes of stress?
External and Internal factors.
List external factors that can cause stress.
Environment, social interactions, major - life events.
List internal factors that can cause stress.
Illness and infection, psychological factors, lack of sleep, being critical.
List symptoms of stress?
Increased heart rate and breathing rate, increased adrenaline production and muscle tension. Fidgeting, dry mouth, slow digestion.
What is the 4-stage stress process?
The 4-stage stress process starts with the demands. Stage 2 is the perception of the demand by the athlete which leads to an increase of arousal levels. Then stage 4 is the outcome which relates to the perception of the demand in stage 2. If the athlete followed a positive perception, the athlete would experience increased performance and vice versa for negative.
