self efficacy Flashcards
What is self-efficacy?
Self-efficacy is an athlete’s belief of their own ability to perform to achieve something.
What is Bandura’s theory of self - efficacy?
Bandura’s theory of self-efficacy states that there are four main factors that link to self-efficacy; performance accomplishments, vicarious learning, verbal encouragement and emotional states. These either have a positive and negative impact on an athletes self-efficacy which results in behaviour and performance improvements or decreases.
Explain performance accomplishment.
Performance accomplishment is the strongest source of self-efficacy. These include previous accomplishments within your sport and leaders can remind you of these to increase self-efficacy.
Explain vicarious learning.
Vicarious learning is the second strongest source of self-efficacy and it relates to an athlete seeing a similar performer accomplish or perform something successfully.
Explain verbal encouragement.
Verbal encouragement is when someone close to the athlete reminds them of a time before when they have successfully performed to persuade the athlete they are good enough.
Explain emotional arousal.
Emotional arousal is the least impact source of self-efficacy. It is when an athlete’s emotions affect their performance.
