anxiety Flashcards
What is anxiety?
Anxiety is a negative emotional state that is characterised by feelings of apprehension, nervousness and worry.
What are the two main types of anxiety?
State anxiety and trait anxiety
What is state anxiety?
State anxiety a temporary mood state that is an emotional response to a ‘threat’. Once said ‘threat’ has disappeared, the anxiety has gone.
What is trait anxiety?
Trait anxiety is a behavioural tendency to feel threatened and is usually a personality characteristic, not a temporary feeling.
What is cognitive anxiety?
Cognitive anxiety is the amount an individual worries mentally.
What is somatic anxiety?
Somatic anxiety is the physiological changes as a result of anxiety.
What is competitive anxiety?
Competitive anxiety is when an athlete feels tense or inadequate in response to a fear. Such as changes in a routine or confusion.
What are the two theories of anxiety?
Multidimensional theory of anxiety.
Reversal theory of anxiety.
What is the multidimensional theory of anxiety?
The multidimensional theory suggest that somatic and cognitive anxiety affect performance in different ways. Generally cognitive anxiety is believed to decrease performance while somatic anxiety is thought to enhance performance. However, cognitive anxiety can improve performance to motivate them more but too much can reduce performance.
What is the reversal theory?
The reversal theory suggests that it is the perception of the athletes that determines performance. So if an athlete has a positive perception of anxiety, their performance will become enhanced.
What is the fight or flight response?
The fight or flight response is an automatic physiological reaction to an event that is percieved as stressful or frightening. This response is caused by an increase in cortisol and adrenaline levels.
