mindset Flashcards
What is mindset?
Mindset is an athletes mental outlook ahead of a performance, which can either help or hinder their chances of success.
What are the two types of mindset?
Fixed mindset or Growth mindset.
What is a fixed mindset?
A fixed mindset is when athletes:
- believe intelligence and talent are fixed
- avoid challenges and obstacles
-don’t fulfil their full potential
- give up easily
What is a growth mindset?
A growth mindset is when athletes:
- understand that intelligence can be developed
- embrace challenges
- work hard to learn more
- are resilient
What is Dweck’s theory of Growth vs Fixed mindset?
Carol Dweck proposed the theory of fixed vs growth mindsets. Dweck stated, ‘Just because some people can do something with little or no training, it doesn’t mean that others can’t do it (and sometimes do it even better) with training.’
What mindset is better to have?
A Growth mindset will increase: confidence, motivation, self-efficacy and ultimately their productivity and performance.
What are the three subsections of Carol Dweck’s theory?
There are three arguments that contribute towards the two mindsets; Talent vs Effort, 10,000 hours of practice and Learned Helplessness.
Explain Talent vs Effort.
Talent vs Effort is the argument that effort is much more important than talent. This is due to conventional thinking of being talented and intelligent gets you better places in life being proven incorrect and Dweck found being talented can become more of an obstacle than achievement. This links to a Growth mindset.
Explain 10,000 hours of practice.
10,000 hours of practice was the idea that someone worked for 10,000 hours; 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, 44 weeks a year for 5 and a half years) to master a subject. This was the initial idea for this theory as it stated someone could improve or master an unknown subject if they spent 10,000 hours mastering it. The current perception of this idea has an altered view as people believe it is not so much the time you put into practising but what you put into practice that will allow you to master something. This links to a Growth mindset.
Explain Learned Helplessness.
Learned Helplessness is once an athlete experiences a failure in their sport and they feel the situation is now out of their control. Athletes will begin to feel powerless after persistent failure and will belittle their own ability. This links to a fixed mindset.
