Behavioral Medicine

Health Psychology

Stress
Positive form of stress that pushes people to achieve or accomplish goals
Eustress
Negative stress that can wear down on the body
Disress
Condition or even that challenges or threatens a person
Stressors
Low intensity stressors that can be external (finding a job) or personal (finding motivation to do homework)
Frustrations
First step which looks at the situation and ask is it revelt or threatening
Primary Appraisal of Stress
Person considers the resources for copying or responding to the stressor
Secondary Appraisal of Stress
Occurs when something dangerous or life threatening occurs and people respond in a way that prepare them to fight or flee
Fight or Flight Response
Hormones that prepares the body to respond to stress
Adrenaline
“the stress hormone” that is secreted to deal with chronic stress
Cotisol
3 stage sequence of bodily reaction to stress: Alarm, Resistance, Exhaustion
General Adaptation Syndrome
Leading cause of death in the US, result from clogging the coronary arteries and the reduction in blood and oxygen supply to the heart muscle

Term for pattern in a person of competitive, impatient, verbally aggressive, and anger-prone
Type A
Term for pattern in a person that is easygoing
Type B
Act of facing and dealing with problems and stressors, can be problemed, emotion, and appraisal focuses
