states of matter? Flashcards
What are the properties of a solid? (5)
Particles in a fixed shape, vibrate slowly, cannot be compressed or diffuse. Less energy
What are the properties of a liquid? (5)
particles flow over each other + fill shape of container. cannot be compressed… easily. can diffuse. more energy than solid
Which states of matter can diffuse?
liquids and gases (not a solid in solid, but a solid in liquid/gas)
What affects diffusion? (4)
State of matter, temp, atomic mass, density
How can you find the atomic mass on the periodic table?
The higher number shown on an element
What diffuses faster- denser or lighter things?
Lighter
What is Brownian motion?
It describes the random path taken by particles as they collide with other particles
What is diffusion?
The natural movement of substances (without stirring) /in/ liquids and gases, because the particles are free to move
What is the difference between evaporation and boiling?
In boiling, the liquid that is boiling can push up against the atmospheric pressure and escape
What is normal distribution?
Most things have a medium amount of something, and some have higher/ lower amounts
What happens when the hot particles in an evaporating liquid (to the overall temp) evaporate?
The temp decreases
What analogy can describe normal distribution?
Marbles in a tray
How can puddles “disappear” under the boiling point?
It’s not boiling, it’s evaporating. It happens a lot slower as a small amount of particles leave the liquid
What happens when a solid gains energy?
It uses that energy to break its bonds, therefore not heating up. It has less bonds now and it melts into liquid.
