Stages of learning Flashcards
SKILL ACQUISITION
1
Q
what are the 3 stages of learning?
A
- cognitive
- associative
- autonomous
2
Q
what are the 7 factors that impact the stages of learning?
A
- type of practice
- performance
- guidance
- errors
- adapting
- attention
- feedback
3
Q
what is the impact of the 7 factors at the cognitive stage of learning?
(beginner)
A
- type of practice
mental practice occurs to allow learner to form a basic understanding - performance
the skill is performed inconsistently with only some improvement - guidance
learner relies on guidance to understand - errors
basic errors are common due to the trial and error nature of the stage - adapting
learner doesn’t understand how to adapt the skill to different situations - attention
leaner has a large proportion of attention is on the skill - feedback
external, positive and terminal feedback are most efficient
4
Q
what is the impact of the 7 factors at the associative stage of learning? (competent)
A
- type of practice
shift towards physical practice occurs - performance
skill performance becomes more consistent, with largest improvements during this stage - guidance
learner begins to gain a personal understanding and not as reliant - errors
fewer basic errors but still occur during complex movements - adapting
learner begins to learn how to adapt skill in different situations - attention
the balance between conscious and autonomous occurs, medial attention required - feedback
less external feedback, more intrinsic feedback but positive feedback still effective
5
Q
what is the impact of the 7 factors on the autonomous stage of learning? (elite)
A
- type of practice
physical practice and analysis takes place - performance
skills are successfully performed consistently with slight improvement - guidance
learner has total knowledge on how to perform skill - errors
very few errors throughout the whole skill - adapting
learner can easily adapt skill to different situations - attention
movement now in autonomous control, therefore little to no conscious thought needed for skill - feedback
intrinsic, concurrent and negative feedback are most effective
6
Q
when does the learning plateau occur?
A
when the skill performance doesn’t show any signs of improve and therefore plateaus.
7
Q
what causes the learning plateau?
A
- disinterest
- fatigue
- boredom
- loss of motivation
- poor coaching
- lack of feedback
- lack of challenge
- lack of ability
8
Q
how to prevent a learning plateau?
A
- improve skill level of performer by attending separate subroutines of complicated skill
- improve motivation by intrinsic and external rewards
- use an experienced coach
- sufficient recovery periods
- make practice more enjoyable and adaptable
