Confidence and self-efficacy Flashcards
SPORTS PSYCHOLOGY

- high focus
- positive thinking
- feeling of calmness

how does performance impact sports confidence
if high:
- athlete feels ready and prepared to compete successfully
- increases to optimal arousal
- allows more successful performance risks
if low:
- athlete doesn’t feel ready
- can become over aroused
- performance decreases as they don’t believe they can perform successfully
how does participation impact sports confidence
if high:
- more likely to take part
- less afraid of failure
- high drive to succeed
if low:

how does self-esteem impact sports confidence
based on personality and hobbies
if high:
- give athlete positive outlook on sport
- can increase sports confidence by increasing individual belief they can perform everyday tasks successfully
if low:
- negative outlook on sport
- decrease sport confidence as belief isn’t reinforced
what is vealey’s model of sports confidence
an objective sport situation triggers the individuals ‘SC trait’ (trait sport confidence) and competitive orientation which indicates individuals overall ‘SC state’ (state sport confidence) toward the situation. that leads to how they perform their skill requires in situation. the individuals subjective perception on how they executed the skill then impacts an increase or decrease of their SC trait and competitive orientation.
SC trait = stable factors
competitive orientation = unstable factors
SC state = behaviour toward situation
subjective perception = individuals feelings/kinethetics
how does an individuals subjective perception influence their SC trait and state and competitive orientation
if good:
- reinforces their SC trait
- increases competitive orientation
- increases SC state (more likely to perform successfully again)
if bad:
- doesn’t reinforce SC trait
- decreases competitive orientation
- decreases SC state (more likely to not perform skill again as they don’t want to fail)
what are the components of bandura’s model of self-efficacy?
- vicarious experiences
watching other athletes with a similar ability level performing well in a similar situation - develops athletes own self-efficacy - performance accomplishments
past experiences of athlete in similar situation - determines their efficacy - verbal persuasion
significant others like coaches/teammates can increase athletes self-efficacy, by telling them they have confidence in their ability - emotional arousal
your emotional state determines how confident you are in a situation. higher if happy and lower if sad
these 4 factors connect together to create the individuals efficacy expectations of a situation which determines their performance level

the tendency for sports teams to perform better when playing at their home facility
what are the pros and cons of a home field advantage
pros

- social facilitation
- improvements in self-efficacy
cons
- increases pressure on players
- increases anxiety of players
- choke effect on players
- evaluation apprehension
- social inhibition
what is the choke effect

what is evaluation apprehension
the anxiety a performer experiences when they feel they are being judged by others
7 strategies to develop high levels of self-efficacy
