Social Facilitation Flashcards
SPORTS PSYCHOLOGY
what is social facilitation?
when the presence of an audience increases a performers arousal and alertness therefore increasing performance
what is social inhibition?
when the presence of an audience increases the performers anxiety and nervous level therefore decreasing their performance
what is zajonc’s model?
as arousal increases, when a audience is present, so does the dominant response of the performer
athletes with the correct dominant response will benefit from this (SF) and athletes with the incorrect dominant response won’t (SI)
who/what gives the correct dominant response when an audience is present promoting social facilitation?
- extroverts
- experts
- simple skills (require less attention - habitatal nature)
- gross skills (less information processing)
who/what gives the wrong dominant response when an audience is present promoting social inhibition?
- introverts
- beginners
- complex skills (require a lot of information processing)
- fine skills (low arousal levels are required therefore could go wrong)
what is evaluative apprehension?
an increase in arousal which negatively impacts performance when an individual thinks they are going to be judged by an audience
when does evaluative apprehension happen?
when the performer has high levels of anxiety, low confidence or inexperience.
5 strategies to prevent social inhibition
- selective attention to important stimuli
- mental rehearsal before and during a game
- use audience during training
- repeat skill during training to reach autonomous stage of learning
- goal setting
