what is attitude?
are emotional feelings that a person has towards an attitude object which affects how they act towards it
(can affect motivation and persistence within sport)
attitude is affected by…
conditioning:
- individuals being awarded for attitude can allow them to adapt it
personality type:
- extroverts = more positive towards sports
- introverts = less positive towards sport
social influences:
- significant others (family, role models, coach etc.)
- most likely affect attitude positively toward a situation
personal experiences:
- positive experiences = positive attitude in the future when in the same situation (visa versa)
components of the triadic model of attitude
- affective - feelings
experiencing a positive emotion towards an attitude object result in positive attitude - behavioural - act
previous behaviour when faced with attitude object will influence attitude - cognitive - think
a way a person thinks towards the attitude object
what makes persuasive communication affective?
- the receiver wants to change
- persuader is a significant person to the receiver
- communication occurs in a clear and concise manner
what makes cognitive dissonance affective? (uses triadic components)
example: an individual doesn’t want to take part in badminton because they think it wont improve their fitness.
- affective - watch other athletes play at high intensity / elite level
- behavioural - make them take part in a match against a fit individual to highlight importance of fitness
- cognitive - tell individual the positive affects of badminton and taking part
examples of a positive attitude
- extroverted
- positive attitude parents
- being successful before
- received awards for good attitude/behaviour
examples of a negative attitude
- introverted
- friends have negative attitude
- previous bad experience
- taking part is stressful
- worried about injury
