SPORTS PSYCHOLOGY
what is aggression?
any act which performed to purposely harm someone that breaks the rules of sport.
what is direct aggression?
when players foul each other (e.g. yellow and red cards in football)
what 2 forms of aggression are within the rules of sport?
- channelled aggression
- assertion
what is instinct theory?
suggests that all humans have the tendency to act aggressive as a natural response.
(traits from the ‘cave men’ and ‘hunters’)
what is social learning theory?
proposes that we learn aggressive behaviour from our environment (idols, friends, family)
what is frustration-aggression hypothesis?
explains the link between aggression and frustration.
“aggression only happens when someone is frustrated”
what is aggressive cue theory?
proposes that there are certain cues which a performer respond to in an aggressive way
5 strategies to control aggression:
- mental calming techniques (when aggression strikes)
- promote walking away from situation
- set goals
- teach aggression wont be tolerated
- reinforce ethics and values of sport
