What is a statue
It is a way of organizing people into different groups in order to classify them.
What is an ascribe status?
Something involuntary given to an individual such as race, culture, gender, etc.
What is achieved status?
A status achieved through the choices one makes.
What is master status?
A status by which an individual is most likely to be identified as.
What is role performance?
Performing the status you present to others. A doctor must treat his/her patients and help them understand medical terminology.
What is role partner?
The person with whom you are interacting with. For a doctor it can be nurse, patients, patient’s family, etc.
What is role conflict?
Difficulty satisfying the expectations for different roles.
What is role strain?
Difficulty satisfying multiple expectations for one role.
What is role exit?
Dropping one identity for another.
What is a peer group?
group of similar age, interest, status, interests which allow for friendship.
What is a family group?
determined by birth, adoption, marriage. May have in groups: those who belong. Or Out groups: those who are in opposition.
What are reference groups?
Reference yourself to the group to see how you compare.
Compare primary and secondary groups
Primary group are your close friends and family
Secondary group are your superficial friendships.
What is group conformity?
To be compliant, someone night not speak out in order to maintain harmony in order to be accepted.
Contrast immediate and loose network
Immediate network are the tight knit groups
Loose networks are weaker ties.
Contrast groups and organizations
- Organizations exist even after one person leaves.
- Expressed goals to achieve.
- Hierarchy of management.
What is mcdonalization?
Shift towards efficient, predictable, calculability, and control in societies.
What is the basic model of emotional expression?
Founded by Charles Darwin and it states that all animals have similar facial expression to show their emotions.
What is the social construction model?
States there is no biological basis for emotion, but says it is found in context situations. Emotions are expressed differently across cultures.
What is cultural syndrome?
Shared set of beliefs, attitudes, norms, values, and behaviors on how to interpret emotions.
Describe the three types of self.
Authentic self: who you really are, positive & negative.
Ideal self: who you strive to be
Tactical self: who you present yourself to be
