Perception & Sensation Flashcards
What is the absolute threshold?
The minimum intensity of stimuli needed in order to noticed by the sensory nerves.
What is the threshold of conscious perception?
A stimulus below the threshold of conscious perception arrives at the central nervous system, but does not reach the higher-order brain regions that control attention and consciousness
Weber’s law
k = change in intensity/ magnitude of original intensity.
Outcomes of signal detection theory experiment
Hit: correctly identified stimuli
Miss: when there wasn’t when there was.
False alarm: said there was when there wasn’t.
Correct negative: said there wasn’t when there wasn’t.
What is the function of the retina?
Convert photons to electric signals for the CNS.
Contrast cones vs rods
Cones are for color
Rods are for black and white.
More rods than cones.
What is the fovea?
Concentrated area for cones.
Describe the relay for information starting at retina
Retina- > cones and rods -> bipolar -> ganglion cells -> amacrine and horizontal.
What helps to detect linear acceleration?
Utricle and Saccule
What helps to detect rotational acceleration?
semi circular canals.
what is the signal detection theory?
Theory to determine the chances or a hit or a miss in terms of detecting a stimuli.
Contrast bottoms up vs top down
Bottom up: stimulus influences our perception, start with no preconceived idea (data driven)
Top down: uses background knowledge to influence perception ( theory driven)
What is the law of similarity?
Your brain groups objects together that are similar to each other.
What is the Pragnanz law?
Your brain puts reality into the simplest form.
What is the law of proxmity?
Your brain groups objects together that are close to each other.
