What are the components of the limbic system

What is the function of the hippocampus?
Converts short term memory into long term memory
What is the function of the thalamus?
Sensory relay station
What is the function of the amygdala?
Aggression center for emotions.
What is the function of the hypothalamus?
Hormonal control & controls the autonomic nervous system.
What is Kluver Bucy syndrome?
Bilateral destruction of the amygdala. Causes hyperorality, hypersexuality, and disinhibited behavior.
What is the Cannon- Bard Theory of emotion?
This theory states that the cognition and physiological responses produces by a stimuli occur at the same time and are independent of each other.
The Schachter-Singer theory of emotion states that:
Cognitive Arousal Theory. Once we experience physiological arousal we make a conscious cognitive interpretation based on our circumstences, and then behave accordingly
What are the three components to emotion?
The physiological response: heart rate, sweating, etc.
The behavioral response: facial expressions.
The cognitive response: processing emotion.
What are the seven universal emotions?
Described by Darwin and Paul Ekman.
- Happy
- Sad
- Angry
- Surprised
- Fear
- Disgust
- Contempt
Describe the James Lange theory of emotion.
This theory states that the psychological responses to a stimuli cause humans to feel emotion.
Contrast left and right hemispheres with emotion
Left hemisphere: positive emotion & sociable.
Right hemisphere: negative emotion & isolated.
What is cognitive appraisal?
Subjective evaluation of a stressor which comprises of the primary and secondary appraisal.
What is primary appraisal?
Initial evaluation of the stressor. The stressor can either be irrelevant, benign positive, or a threat.
What is secondary appraisal?
Further evaluation wether the animal can deal with the stress.

- What is the threat, future threat?
- What is the challenge to overcome this?
Contrast Eustress and Distress.
Distress are unpleasant stressors.
Eustress are pleasant stressors which cause a change in your life.
Contrast the three types of conflict stressors
Approach-approach: pick between two goods things.
Avoid- avoid: pick between two bad things.
Approach-avoid: picking something which has both positive and negative elements.
What are the three levels of psychological responses to stress?
- ACTH is secretes allowing the adrenal to produce cortisol for glucose release. Epinephrine is released to maintain level of awareness.
- Continued maintenance of hormones in the body to deal with stress.
- Body can no longer maintain the level of hormones and shuts down the response. Immune system begins to slow allowing for sickness.
Describe 4 stressors:
- Significant Life Change: divorce, graduation, moving.
- Catastrophic Changes: war, natural disasters, disease.
- Daily Life Stressors: traffic, forgetting keys, long lines
- Ambient stressors: global warming, pollution, etc.

What are ways to cope with stress
- Take control of your life (Perceived control)
- Optimism
- Social Support
