Gases Flashcards
How would you describe gas pressure?
Gas pressure is the pressure per unit area. The number of collisions the gas exerts against a container is the pressure of the container. The number of particles, the volume of the container, and the temperature of the system all effect the amount of collisions and, therefore, effect the pressure.
What are the 4 keys to the kinetic molecular theory?
- No volume
- Elastic (conservative) energy
- Random motion
- No intermolecular forces.
Compare molecular weight and speed of a molecule
The lighter the molecule then the faster it will travel in a container.
The heavier the molecule then the slower it will travel in a container.
Compare molecular weight and pressure in a container.
It is true heavier molecules will move slower, but they also have more momentum.
Therefore, the pressure of a container is INDEPENDENT of molecular weight.
What is the free mean path?
Distance between molecular collisions between gas particles. The larger, then the greater the distance between molecules.
When are gases most likely to resemble ideal gases?
high temperature
low pressure
small, inert molecules.
What is the ideal gas law?
pv= nrt.
temperature is in kelvin.
What is avagordro’s law?
The number of moles is proportional to the volume.
What is Boyle’s law?
The volume is inversely proportional to the pressure
What is Charles’s Law
Volume is proportional to temperature
How do you find rms?
square root of 3RT/ m
what is the formula for relative velocity?
v1/ v2 = square root of m2/ m1
What effects effusion of gases through a small hole.
Size, the smaller the faster.
Concentration, the more the more likely of collision.
