Skeletal System 8 Spongy Bone + Bone Marrow Flashcards
Define Tribecular Bone/Spongy Bone:
Loosly organized osteous tissue
Cells + bone matrix form a Trabecylae - thin spikes of bone that form an open network
Location: Metaphysis + Epithysis
Contains: Osteocytes + bone matrix arranged in lamellae layers
Function of Spongy Bone:
Provide strength w/out additional weight
Store bone marrow
Define Bone Marrow:
Tissue that occupies the medullary Cavities
The 2 kinds of Bone Marrow:
Red Bone Marrow + Yellow Bone Marrow
Define Red Bone Marrow:
Cells: Blood stem cells
Function: Produce white + red blood cells
In infants red bone marrow is in all bones
in adults most of it turns into yellow bone marrow
In adults Red Bone Marrow is only found where:
Skull
Vertebrae
Ribs
Sternum
Hips
Proximal Apithysis Humerus Femur
Define Yellow Bone Marrow:
Cells: Adipocytes (fat cells)
Function: Stores lipids
Location: In adults, all medullary cavities of extremities
Except proximal ends of humerus + femur
