Human Bio 1 Cells Flashcards
How do we know that something is alive?
Made of 1 or more CELL
Cells are organized into tissues, organs
Ability to sense + react to changes
Homeostasis + Metabolism
Grow + Develop
Reproduce
Define Growth:
Increase in size
Define Development:
Change in form + function over lifetime
Define Metabolism:
All the chemical reactions that occur in the human body
The 2 types of Metabolism:
Anabolism + Catabolism
Define Anabolism:
Build up form smaller to larger molecules
Define Catabolism:
breakdown of larger to smaller molecules
Metabolism cause?
constant turnover of cells + molecules in the body
Define Homeostasis:
Maintenance of the internal environment despite a changing external environment
failure to maintain homeostasis:
results in illness or death
Define Equilibrium:
balance
Define Set Point
Desired Value
Define Stimulus:
A change in the environment that disrupts the equilibrium/balance
The body maintains Homeostasis in 2 ways:
Negative Feedback
Positive Feedback
Define Negative Feedback:
The body counteracts/rejects the stimulus/disruption
Main reaction to a stimulus=reject
ex:sweat to maintain body’s temperature
