Human Chemistry 2 Flashcards
Define a Reactive Atom:
Atoms with unfilled or incomplete energy shells
Define a Stable Atom:
Atoms with filled or complete outer energy shells
Atoms with MORE Protons are what charge?
Net-Positive Charge
Atoms with MORE Electrons are what charge
Net-Negative Charge
When an Atom gains or loses an electron it becomes?
No longer neutral, it is now electrically charged
Define ION:
A type of atom where the # of Protons does NOT equal the # of Electrons
Define Cation:
Ion with a POSITIVE charge
Na +
Define Anion:
Ion with a NEGATIVE charge
Na -
Define Ionize:
To seperate into IONS
Nacl —> Na+ + Cl -
Define Electrolytes:
Compounds thar ionize in water and form solutions thar can conduct electricity
Why are Electrolytes important?
Essential for osmotic effects controlling water content in the body and electrical effects of nerves and muscles
An inbalance of electrolytes results in?
Muscle cramps, brittle bones, coma, death
Define Free Radicals:
Atoms w/ an ODD # of valance electrons
How are Free Radical formed?
Normal metabolic reactions, radiation,Chemicals
Why are Free radicals highly reactive and detriment?
They destroy cells and cause mutations in DNA
