Human Genetics: Genetic Inheritance Flashcards
Define Gene Locus:
Specific gene on a chromosome that allows genes on ova to line up with corresponding genes on sperm
Does not vary person to person
Ex: chromosome 12
Each person has 2 sets of?
2 sets of chromosomes for each gene locus, one from ova and one from sperm
Define Genotype:
Genetic informatiin stored at the gene locus
Ex: Bb
Define Phenotype:
The physical manifeststion of a genotype
Define Alleles:
Different forms of a gene
Homozygous or Heterozygous
Define Homozygous Alleles:
2 of the same alleles
BB or bb
Define Heterozygous Alleles:
2 different alleles
Bb
Define a Dominant Allele:
1 allele has more influence in determining a specific trait
Cc
Define a Recessive Allele:
The other allele has less of an influence
cc
Definw Condominant:
Equally dominant alleles
Neither is dominant or recessivw
Ex: A,B, O blood type
AB
Define a Punnent Square:
Probability diagrams that predict offsrping having a particular genotype
Sex-linkes genes are carried on?
On sex chromosomes
XX,XY
Almost all sex-linkes genes appear on?
The X chromosome and are recessive because there is less genetic material on the Y chromosome
In males sex-linkes chromosomes behave?
Behave like dominant genes because no second X chromosome exisits
Boy= XY
Males can only transmit x-linked genes to their?
Daughters since the male donates an X chromosome to his daughter never sons
The male donates the Y chromosome to his sons
